July 13, 2007, Newsletter Issue #72: Shipping Pallets To Foreign Countries

Tip of the Week

If you are venturing into international commerce, there are important regulations you need to know regarding pallets. The International Plant Protection Convention specifies that pallets must be constructed with material that doesn’t allow invasive species of plants and insects to travel from one country to another. If you have “raw wood” pallets, they must be treated with a chemical treatment or a heat treatment to kill pests. Aluminum, steel, plastic, and “engineered wood” are exempt from these treatments. Unfortunately, you can’t simply apply a pest-control treatment to your raw wood pallets; this must be done with the supervision of an approved agency.
