The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) has regulations for portable ramps in the longshoring industry. They are as follows.
Portable ramps used afloat should be:
- Well maintained
Strong enough to support the loads imposed on them
Equipped with a railing meeting certain requirements if the slope is more than 20 degrees to the horizontal or if employees could fall more than 4 feet
Equipped with a slip resistant surface
Properly secured
Designed, constructed, and maintained to prevent vehicles from running off the edge
