The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) has regulations for portable ramps in the longshoring industry. They are as follows.

Portable ramps used afloat should be:

  • Well maintained

  • Strong enough to support the loads imposed on them


  • Equipped with a railing meeting certain requirements if the slope is more than 20 degrees to the horizontal or if employees could fall more than 4 feet


  • Equipped with a slip resistant surface


  • Properly secured


  • Designed, constructed, and maintained to prevent vehicles from running off the edge
