August 17, 2007, Newsletter Issue #76: Unloading Cargo with a Wheel Riser Ramp

1

Tip of the Week

BeaconTechnology.com Tip: Height-adjustable yard ramps are used by companies that don’t have loading docks (or whose loading docks are all in use) to unload cargo without manually lifting each piece or delaying the shipping and receiving process, to supplement loading docks that are too low for the truck bed clearance, or to unload curtain-sided trailers carriers for which docks are inappropriate.

A wheel riser ramp raises the trucks to a maximum 10 percent grade, in compliance with OSHA requirements. Economical, heavy-duty steel or salt-air resistant aluminum ramps can elevate semi-trailers to docks, with a 40,000-pound capacity with the accompanying risers. (Most yard ramps have a capacity of at least 20,000 pounds.) Portable aluminum ramps with grip-strut walks can be used where there is no dock; these have open design to ensure traction even in snow, rain and ice; versatile mini-ramps of impact-resistant plastic are suitable for smaller jobs, with a 5,000-pound capacity.

A safety tip: However good your ramps, don’t forget to use barriers at the open edges to protect passersby.
